CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

- Olivia -

For some reason, I didn’t mind being bossed around by Nate this time. I pulled on the clothes he’d offered me then crawled under the covers, using a hair tie to wrap my hair on top of my head before leaning back against the headboard.

I couldn’t help but smile when Nate returned. He always looked hot without a shirt, but something about the way his sweats hung loosely around his hips really accented the ridge between the muscles along his sides. He handed me a coffee mug, his expression sheepish.

I thanked him, peered into the cup, then laughed.

“It turns out I don’t actually have tea,” he explained.

“So you brought me a cup of hot water?”

Nate shrugged.

I supposed that was sweet. I took a sip, only to appease him, then set the mug on the nightstand and scooted over to make room for him beside me.

He stretched out along the edge of the bed, scooting one arm beneath me and angling me onto his chest. I sighed happily, settling into my happiest place in the world. Neither of us spoke for several minutes, but I could tell Nate was thinking about something by the way he mindlessly traced circles and swirls on my arm with his finger.

I was the first one to break the silence.

“That wasn’t my intention when I came over here,” I said.

“Do I look like I’m complaining?”

“You were right to end things with me. I’m a mess, and if you give me the chance, I’ll only drag you down with me.” I paused, but not long enough for him to jump in. “I just came here to apologize. I never even considered you’d think there was something wrong with you. That’s just…crazy. I only wanted to set the record straight.”

He loosened his grip on me, tilting his head until our faces met. “What record is that?”

I took my time answering. “That it’s me, not you. I’m the reason this isn’t working.”

His brows dipped in unison. “The only reason it wasn’t working was because I didn’t know how you felt. Now I do, so everything is fixed.”

“I’m sorry,” I said, glad he agreed I was to blame.

I felt his lips press against my forehead, and they lingered there while he spoke.

“No, I’m sorry. If you don’t see how special you are, that’s on me. This is all my fault for letting you think there’s something wrong with you.”

“You didn’t let me do anything,” I said. “It’s not your job to make me happy. You can’t fix everything that’s broken.”

“I can try.” He rolled to his side, nudging me off of him then pinning me beneath his arm. Normally, that was one of my favorite positions, trapped beneath him, my view limited to his perfectly carved facial features and firm rippling biceps. But now, it felt restricting. Vulnerable, even. I could close my eyes to avoid his inquisitive stare, but he’d still be able to see me and all my flaws.

“I get why you don’t trust people, Liv.
