CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
- Olivia -
For some reason, I didnât mind being bossed around by Nate this time. I pulled on the clothes heâd offered me then crawled under the covers, using a hair tie to wrap my hair on top of my head before leaning back against the headboard.
I couldnât help but smile when Nate returned. He always looked hot without a shirt, but something about the way his sweats hung loosely around his hips really accented the ridge between the muscles along his sides. He handed me a coffee mug, his expression sheepish.
I thanked him, peered into the cup, then laughed.
âIt turns out I donât actually have tea,â he explained.
âSo you brought me a cup of hot water?â
Nate shrugged.
I supposed that was sweet. I took a sip, only to appease him, then set the mug on the nightstand and scooted over to make room for him beside me.
He stretched out along the edge of the bed, scooting one arm beneath me and angling me onto his chest. I sighed happily, settling into my happiest place in the world. Neither of us spoke for several minutes, but I could tell Nate was thinking about something by the way he mindlessly traced circles and swirls on my arm with his finger.
I was the first one to break the silence.
âThat wasnât my intention when I came over here,â I said.
âDo I look like Iâm complaining?â
âYou were right to end things with me. Iâm a mess, and if you give me the chance, Iâll only drag you down with me.â I paused, but not long enough for him to jump in. âI just came here to apologize. I never even considered youâd think there was something wrong with you. Thatâs justâ¦crazy. I only wanted to set the record straight.â
He loosened his grip on me, tilting his head until our faces met. âWhat record is that?â
I took my time answering. âThat itâs me, not you. Iâm the reason this isnât working.â
His brows dipped in unison. âThe only reason it wasnât working was because I didnât know how you felt. Now I do, so everything is fixed.â
âIâm sorry,â I said, glad he agreed I was to blame.
I felt his lips press against my forehead, and they lingered there while he spoke.
âNo, Iâm sorry. If you donât see how special you are, thatâs on me. This is all my fault for letting you think thereâs something wrong with you.â
âYou didnât let me do anything,â I said. âItâs not your job to make me happy. You canât fix everything thatâs broken.â
âI can try.â He rolled to his side, nudging me off of him then pinning me beneath his arm. Normally, that was one of my favorite positions, trapped beneath him, my view limited to his perfectly carved facial features and firm rippling biceps. But now, it felt restricting. Vulnerable, even. I could close my eyes to avoid his inquisitive stare, but heâd still be able to see me and all my flaws.
âI get why you donât trust people, Liv.
